Funding an investment
A practical learning experience for first-time investors
How does money reach the market?
After learning what account records your shares, you still need a way to pay for them. You may be able to send investment funds from your existing bank account to the designated account of an authorized broker, depending on the institution's accepted funding arrangements.
Your existing bank
Money begins in your home currency, perhaps U.S. dollars.
Approved funding arrangements
The licensed financial institution explains how funds are received and, where needed, converted.
The share purchase
The broker arranges payment and settlement in accordance with the relevant market's rules.
Do you need your own bank account in that country?
Not necessarily. A bank is involved in moving and settling money, but it does not automatically mean you must open a personal bank account in the country where the shares are listed. Some approved brokers can receive investment funds directly. The participating institution confirms the available arrangements.
Opening a local bank account may be useful if you intend to invest repeatedly, but it should not be presented as a universal requirement.
